Phil and I both have one of these amazing power supplies. Mine is turning 10 years old this year and I've never had one problem with it! As I'm writing this article I'm listening to coast to coast radio on my FT-847 and you guessed it, it's being powered by my Alinco power supply.
Due to the lightning strike at the repeater site Phil's Alinco took a direct hit from the power lines. Initially the only issue seemed to be a well toasted full wave bridge rectifier. I ordered it online and received it a few days later. Once installed Phil was able to make a couple contacts using the supply on his 2 meter radio running on high power (approximately 50 watts). When he hooked the Kenwood up to the power supply and threw the switch it was followed by a very loud BANG! One of the switching transistors exploded inside the unit. We were able to call Alinco and order the part(s). A very nice Ham answered the phone and after explaining the situation recommended that we replace both of the transistors. Our costs was about $25 US.
The parts came in today and the first chance we get to stop and solder the new transistors in place we should be back up and running with the power supply again.
Say a prayer for us, cross your fingers, and let's all hope that we don't let the smoke out!
Once we get the PS up and running again we intend to put the repeater on it and attempt to bring it back up under low power.
We're still in dire need of a power supply board for a VXR-7000, so if you have one send it our way!
