The EchoStation Experiment

E-mail Print PDF

Wow! I just can't say enough about how fast K1RFD responded to my request. In less than an hour of writting this short article he'd issued a new registration number for the club call.

After some debate and not without a great deal of consideration we decided to give EchoStation a try on the 145.410 repeater W4EWR Pensacola.

The install went fairly smooth. The setup is another story! The system we put in place is an old HP micro desktop. It is a fairly slow machine, but more than meets the recomendations for EchoStation.

The first major obstacle is the EchoStation site seems to be experiencing some difficulty. When I originally purchased the software I registered it under my call and not the club call. Getting this changed is not as simple as I thought and ultimately I may have to spend another $20 for another key. I've written them and am waiting to hear back now.

The audio settings seem to be extreemly sensitive. Getting the VOX tail too short gives a double courtesy beep/tone and too long leaves a long delay before the tone after someone has unkeyed. Finding a happy medium hasn't been achieved just yet. We're working on it, so it is just a matter of time.

One way to overcome this issue is to possibly use the repeaters squelch to key and unkey the transmitter. I am not sure yet if this is only open when the proper tone is present on the input, but will be testing this in the next week or so. If this is indeed the case it will cure 99% of the issues we are experiencing.

There has been a bit of difficulty figuring out how to set the remote control link due to a double stacked router. Here again a bit of study and research may yield the needed information on configuration. Even after putting the machine in the DMZ we were unable to access the page.

We'll keep tweaking it until we get it right or come up with the funds to buy a stand alone repeater controller! Wish us luck.

Results: Incorporation Poll

E-mail Print PDF

I was a little sad to see so few people had an opinion about clubs incorporating. This is a hot topic around the country, but falls into one of those political catagories that many do not want to involve themselves.

Here are the results:

As you can see only 6 people bothered to tell us what they thought!

There is a new poll up now, go cast your vote about your beliefs concerning the FCC!

We've switched our Forums

E-mail Print PDF

Many of you may have visited our old YABB forums. Due to security issues with the YABB product, we've switched to phpbb.

phpbb is a more secure system with a much smoother user friendly interface. The updates are kept current and it has shown to be popular among web designers and administrators. Due to the change our RSS system may be temporarily non functional until there is enough content to populate the feeds.

If you find a broken link or otherwise non-functional area of the site please let us know. We will continue to update our sites and bring a more secure atmosphere to our readers, contributors, and members.

Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.

The Microphone

E-mail Print PDF

Last year sometime W4PWB purchased a pair of condenser microphones from Musician's Friend for a reasonable price. They were 1/2 off at the time and he had some big plans for what to do with the studio microphone pair.

We like to play guitar and since he has some decent recording equipment we decided that we'd use one of the microphones solely for that purpose. The second would perhaps be for vocals or additional backup recording done at the same time while we laid track after track down on the digital recorder.

Shortly after receiving the MXL V63M condenser microphones we discovered that they required 48v of phantom power. This was definitely something that was a let down for both of us. Instead of sending the microphones back to Musician's Friend Phil decided that we would get the required phantom power from a PA amplifier that we'd been using for the electric guitar and other vocals going to yet another PA for final output. In short it worked great and we were on our way to having a stage presence. The recording software was installed into a laptop and although the input was horrible we did make some decent recordings using that method.
