W4PWB

Formerly KG4UNG, W4PWB "Phil" and I have known each other for the better part of 16 years. Serving the volunteer firePhil W4PWB department, performing various security positions, and a host of other jobs has kept Phil pretty busy. After much poking and prodding Phil attained his Technician Class operators license July 31st of 2002. We still joke about the call I made to him saying that the FCC denied his application despite him passing the exam and that he was going to have to retest if he wanted to get on the airwaves.

Phil's generous donation to the club to allow the use of his VXR-7000 (2 meter repeater) was something I wasn't surprised to see. Over the years he has always dug deep into his pockets to help out his fellow man and this was no exception. These days you don't often hear of guys lending out $1200 dollars in gear to anyone.

Phil with his hands in the 813 amplifier projectPhil is thinking about how much fun this old amp would have been had we not smoked the plate choke. Turns out that the meter was switched backwards and a flashover spoiled our fun for the day. After that we decided that the old amplifier needed some major rework. After disassembling the old boat anchor and much debate about what needed to be done a complete schematic was made of the unit and plans to rebuild the old beast were made. A good friend of ours out in Texas who wishes to remain unnamed here until the project is completed has helped us along the way with design and plans for a much safer and more modern version of the twin 813 amplifier. Updates are in the works!

At the time this was written Phil is working on upgrading his Technician license to General Class. I can't wait to hear him on the HF bands talking around the world with me. It just might give us a reason to do a worked all states with the club or something of the sort. He made me a solemn promise to upgrade before the end of the year and I honestly believe this year is going to be the year that he's really going to do it. He's never made a promise like this to me that he hasn't kept and I don't think he wants this one to be the first!
